Congratulations! You’ve successfully launched your medical clinic website. You now have the foundation of your online presence set. The next step is helping potential patients find your website.
The first way you can help people find your site is by ensuring search engines such as Google and Bing can understand and read your website so that it shows up in Google search results. In the inbound marketing world, we call the process of improving your website so that it attracts more visitors from search engines Search Engine Optimization or SEO.
Create a list of Keywords
To help patients find your website via search engines, the first thing you need to do is create a list of words. What are the words your patients actually use when they ask questions or call for appointments? Would your potential patient search for "Urgent Care Clinic in YourTown, Your State"? If so, use "Urgent Care Clinic in YourTown, Your State" as one of your keywords. You can determine which keywords people are already using to find you with tools such as Google analytics. Try to avoid short broad terms like urgent care, flu shot,or allergies alone. Many medical websites use these terms, and focusing your webpage around them makes it difficult to rank on search engines results. Instead, focus on long keywords like the example given above: “Urgent Care Clinic in YourTown, Your State”. Fewer medical websites compete for these long tail search terms making it easier for your website to make it to the top of the Google search results.
Add keywords to every page of your website.
Once you have derived a list of words your patients would search for based on their needs and goals, the next step is to add your keywords to your website. You need to optimize each page of your medical website around a primary keyword. To do this be sure the keyword is in the page title, the page url, and the page header. Also make sure you use the keyword naturally throughout the body of your page content.
Next, go into your images and make sure the alt-text of your image contains your keywords. Search engine can’t read images, so the only way Google is going to know what your image is about is if a keyword is in the alt-text. (As an added bonus, adding alt-text to your images also makes your website more accessible to people with disabilities.) Finally add keywords to the meta description. A meta description is a short summary below the link (or title) of your page in search results. Though the meta description doesn’t actually affect where your page lands in Google’s search results, it can improve the rate at which people click on your link.
Recap- Add keywords to:
- Page Title
- Page url
- Page header
- Body content
- Image alt text
- Meta description
Link to credible sources
Once you have added keywords to your webpages, add links to reliable sources to help build the trustworthiness of your site. Search engines follow links between pages to see how they relate to each other. If a trusted site is linking to your website Google is more likely to see you as a trusted site. You can use links in two ways. You can create internal links which are links that take your visitor to another page on your website. Or you can create an outside link. Outside links send visitors to pages on someone else’s website. Linking to other website pages shows that you have done your homework and will give your visitors a plethora of helpful resources. (As an added tip, make sure all outside links are set to open in a new tab or window so your reader always comes back to your site when they close that window.)
Odds are if you’re operating a medical clinic, your customer base is going to be in the immediate area where your clinic is located. Since your medical clinic is a location specific business, it’s a good idea to create a Google local listing page. Being added to Google’s local listing directory will help tie your website homepage to a specific location. By doing this, prospective patients will be able to find your office via a Google search, and your website will gain credibility with Google for being tied to a real life brick and mortar building. In other words, it will help your medical clinic SEO.
