Houzz project features can happen to you

Houzz projects offer you all the space you want to share pictures, descriptions and keywords of your latest project. Beyond your own profile, the site also features feature projects by professionals through its Advice and Stories section. Getting your projects featured doesn’t take a lot of money (in fact, it’s free) but it does take a little planning and work.

Specific editorial guidelines for feature articles can be found on the site. We’re going to break down how you can ensure your projects meet these guidelines and increase your chances of being featured by one of the site's editorial writers. If you're creating a Houzz marketing strategy, you'll want to set having your project selected for a feature as a goal. 

Before we get started, a few side notes about Houzz project features. Editorial content on the site is written by site staff as well as freelance writers. Articles are not written in exchange for money or products. This helps ensure the best projects are featured. Here’s how to demonstrate your project meets those criteria.

  1. Timeliness. The first requirement is that your project be completed in the last 18 months. Include a year or date range of the project in your project folder to make it clear when the project was completed.
  2. Small to medium sized projects (with small to medium sized budgets) are actually preferred. Regardless of the number of House Hunter episodes you’ve watched with homeowners of budgets well above $500K, that’s not most Americans. In fact, average kitchen remodels range in price from about $11,000 to $42,000.
  3. The details really do matter. You know the project inside and out. You know how the homeowner wanted a coffee bar that could be hidden away or a window with a view of their amazing backyard. Share what the homeowner wanted and how you created a solution. Did you run into any challenges you didn’t foresee? Talk about the impact those had on your project and the budget.
  4. Get the pictures right. Having a project--especially the right project--featured on the site could increase your business and grow your company. If you want to submit a project as a feature, it’s worth it to hire a professional photographer. Not every project you finish will warrant professional photos, but the best ones are well worth it. If you see the project as one with feature potential when you start, go head and get some before pictures to include in your project folder. Those before pictures tell an incredible story about where you started and where you finished.
  5. Utilize your partners. Even the most well designed kitchen won’t make a splash with editors if you take the pictures before your homeowners move in. Talk to your homeowners and their interior designer about staging the kitchen for pictures. If your homeowner isn’t using a designer, consider how you might work the cost of staging into your overall project cost. If you work with a specific designer on a regular basis, you might be able to work together to create a project that’s feature worthy and gives you both credit. Working on a project that requires furniture? Talk to a local furniture store about helping you stage pictures with their furniture. You can both share the images on the site, share the credit and increase business for everyone. It’s a win-win.

Once you’ve uploaded your project images, completed all the information and written a great description, send an email to editor@houzz.com. Make sure your subject line is descriptive like: “Kitchen Remodel of 100 year old farmhouse”.
